Bill Polian Was Right About Lamar Jackson + How To Make the Baltimore Ravens the NFL’s Best

Lamar Jackson, Bill Polian, Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson is an MVP, but one of the biggest issues plaguing the Baltimore Ravens during the superstar’s NFL career is a lack of elite receivers. Sure, Justin Tucker scores more points than anyone. But aside from Mark Andrews and Zay Flowers, Jackson doesn’t really have anyone to throw to.

The solution is obvious and Hall of Fame scout, GM, and Super Bowl champion Bill Polian nailed it years ago when discussing Jackson’s NFL Draft prospects. Here was Polian’s wise advice.

“Short and a little bit slight. Clearly, clearly not the thrower that the other guys are. The accuracy isn’t there.”

NFL QB whisperer Bill Polian on Lamar Jackson in 2018

Polian said this regarding a 2018 NFL Draft class that featured:

  • Baker Mayfield – No. 1 pick – Cleveland Browns
  • Sam Darnold – No. 3 pick – New York Jets
  • Josh Allen – No. 7 pick – Buffalo Bills
  • Josh Rosen – No. 10 pick – Arizona Cardinals
  • Lamar Jackson – No. 32 pick – Baltimore Ravens

As to what position Jackson could potentially play instead? The visionary with the crystal ball knew, even back in 2018, how Jackson could be most successful in the NFL.

“I think wide receiver. Exceptional athlete, exceptional ability to make you miss, exceptional acceleration, exceptional instinct with the ball in his hand and that’s rare for wide receivers. That’s [Antonio Brown], and who else? Name me another one, Julio [Jones is] not even like that.”

Is your mind blown yet? Polian really nailed it. Jackson IS an exceptional athlete. He DOES have an exceptional ability to make you miss. His acceleration? Top notch. The instincts once he gets the ball in his hands? As Polian says, “rare for wide receivers.” So why can’t the Ravens see it?

Think about it. Jackson can’t catch his own passes, not downfield, anyway.

But imagine if Jackson could utilize his electrifying athleticism and ability to make defenders miss by becoming a receiver. He’d immediately become one of the Ravens’ best at gaining yards after the catch. He even tried to show everyone that during the AFC Conference Championship matchup against the Chiefs.

Look at the San Francisco 49ers. Noodle-Arm Brock Purdy is not an elite QB, yet Kyle Shanahan makes Mr. Irrelevant look like one. How? By surrounding him with players who can win after the catch, such as Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle.

Imagine if the Ravens had Jackson using his game-breaking speed to gain big chunks of yards to go with Zay Flowers and Mark Andrews. Suddenly, you’d have a high-powered offense in Baltimore.

We haven’t even gotten to the biggest reason why the Ravens need to move Jackson to wide receiver ASAP.

Coaches frequently speak about how the best players will get a chance to play, but that just isn’t the case in Baltimore, where the Ravens are completely wasting the prime of Pro Bowl QB Tyler Huntley by making him rot away on the bench. This guy made it to the Pro Bowl for a reason, okay?

A Pro Bowl QB, an MVP receiver, and an All-Pro tight end? We’re talking about a unit that could be one of the highest-scoring offenses in the NFL.

If only the Ravens had listened to Bill Polian, perhaps Baltimore would have already had its third Super Bowl win. Instead, it’s a team that struggles to get over the hump, and somehow no one has realized the solution is right there in front of them, with Tyler Huntley at QB and Lamar Jackson at wide receiver.

Don’t @ me.

Harvey Ballbanger loves to shoot the shit. If he were bigger, he’d probably be a baller. Hell, if he hadn’t gotten a wing clipped, he’d be Ballbangin’ for the NFL right now, messing around with triple-doubles in his downtime in the NBA. But that isn’t the case. Instead, Ballbanger’s letting it all hang out, delivering fresh piles, from one throne to another.
