Now you see him, now you don’t. It isn’t magic or grease on his jersey. That’s just the story of Barry Sanders, juking NFL defenders out of their cleats.
Between the lines, Sanders is in his own world. Just ask John Lynch.
Would-be tacklers thought they had the 5-foot-8 running back in their grasp, but just like Detroit Lions Super Bowl wins, Sanders always seemed to find a new way out.
Then, one day, at the peak of his career, Sanders suddenly slipped away from the NFL for a moment, too.
Unfortunately, despite coach Wayne Fontes’ attempts to land Joe Montana and Warren Moon, good quarterback play always escaped the Lions, too. Just don’t tell Scott Mitchell, a wannabe who acted as QB for the Lions from 1994-98 and now wants you to get off his lawn.
Sanders managed to restore the roar on his very first NFL carry. Detroit’s been trying to bring back that same level of excitement ever since.
It’s not like the Lions haven’t had good or even great players. Hall of Famers have come and gone… wait, no, one Hall of Fame player has since tried to restore the roar, but none have been as great as Sanders.
No player disrespected his opponent more than the former NFL MVP. Who else could make Hall of Famers like Lynch and Rod Woodson appear like they don’t even belong on the field? What you are about to see here is a man losing his dignity, in front of thousands of spectators.

That’s hard to watch. But the thing is, Sanders did this to everyone. It wasn’t anything personal. It was just business.
For several years after his retirement, people would ask, “Who will be the next Barry Sanders?” It’s safe to say the game will never see another like No. 20. He is the greatest running back in NFL history. The only person who could possibly be like Sanders is the man himself.
This is why players are now playing other positions in the modern day, they know the bar set by Sanders is not one that can be reached. Do you really think NFL teams aren’t willing to pay running backs?
That’s not the case. The problem is, there isn’t anyone like Barry Sanders, but for whatever reason, the GOAT isn’t interested in playing football yet.
Obviously, there’s still plenty of time for Sanders. He’s coming off a strong season, rushing for 1,491 yards on 343 attempts. With the offensive line the Lions have now, he could easily double his yardage total on half the attempts. He may still be able to get 1,000 yards this season.
Once Sanders starts galloping, that’s it. There is no catching him, even through the moment he ran off the field at the Silverdome. How does Ford Field restore a roar that never really existed in that building to begin with?
There’s really only one solution. It’s time to bring Barry Sanders back to the Detroit Lions. It doesn’t matter whether it’s this season, next season, for the playoffs, whatever it takes.
The point is, the state of Michigan needs to see Sanders running for daylight at least one more time. While that may be the initial agreement that pulls the 55-year-old off the couch, this will be like Pringles, where once Sanders pops one, good luck getting anyone to stop asking for more.
Once we see Sanders in his big retro thigh pads, it will be love at first sight. No one will mutter or even remember the name Jahmyr Gibbs ever again.
At this point, once Sanders is on board when the Lions do finally reach that Super Bowl, we’ll see them actually act like they’ve been there before. Because Barry always does. It’s the only world he knows, and everyone should try to be a bit more like Barry F. Sanders.

Harvey Ballbanger loves to shoot the shit. If he were bigger, he’d probably be a baller. Hell, if he hadn’t gotten a wing clipped, he’d be Ballbangin’ for the NFL right now, messing around with triple-doubles in his downtime in the NBA. But that isn’t the case. Instead, Ballbanger’s letting it all hang out, delivering fresh piles, from one throne to another.
